Early Skill Development and Competitive Edge

Key Focus Areas:

While we plan to have annual showcases, CSEA focuses on strength, flexibility, technique, and consistency, rather than learning routines.  Our partnership with local top cheer facility provides the opportunity to perform routines competitively on a team.

Coaches evaluate progression based on safety, consistency, and execution rather than just attempting harder skills. Proper technique is essential in All Star Cheer, especially at Levels 1-3, where athletes develop foundational skills in tumbling, stunting, jumps, and pyramids. Mastering technique early prevents bad habits, reduces injury risk, and ensures athletes progress safely to higher levels.

Tumbling

Forward & Backward Rolls

  • Keep a tight tuck with knees close to chest
  • Round the back and engage the core for a smooth roll
  • Push through the toes to stand up cleanly at the end

Cartwheel

  • Arms should stay straight by the ears (no “airplane arms”)
  • Kick legs high and strong for a clean line through the skill
  • Finish with feet together and facing forward

Back Walkover

  • Start with feet together, arms by ears, and chin lifted
  • Push through the shoulders and control the arch in the bridge
  • Kick over with straight legs and pointed toes for clean execution

Roundoff

  • Strong punch off the hands for a powerful snap down
  • Land with feet together and chest lifted
  • Use momentum to prepare for connecting tumbling (Levels 2-3)

Back Handspring

  • Sit low in the “power position” before jumping backward
  • Push through legs and shoulders for full extension
  • Snap feet under quickly to land in a hollow, controlled position

Aerial

  • Keep arms tight and core engaged to stay balanced mid-air
  • Drive back leg aggressively to generate rotation
  • Land with soft knees and continue momentum forward
Jumps

Tuck Jump

  • Keep arms in a tight motion before lifting knees to chest
  • Land softly with feet together and chest up

Toe Touch

  • Point toes and keep legs completely straight
  • Snap arms in a tight “T” motion for maximum lift
  • Engage core to land with feet together (avoid landing wide)

Pike Jump

  • Hinge at the hips while keeping legs completely straight
  • Keep arms in front of the body, not behind the legs
  • Snap legs down quickly to land clean
Stunts

Basic Two-Legged Stands

  • Bases should squat, keeping backs straight and heads up
  • Flyers must lock out legs and squeeze their cores
  • Use full hand grips for control (not fingertips)

Half Extension

  • Bases drive through legs while keeping arms locked
  • Flyers should push off the floor evenly with both feet
  • Keep a tight core and engage leg muscles to stay balanced

One-Legged Stunts

  • Flyers: Keep lifted leg tight and knee in line with hips
  • Bases: Drive through the bottom leg and keep arms steady
  • Avoid dipping or twisting before cradles
Pyramids

Waist-Level Transitions

  • Flyers step up with confidence and control
  • Bases maintain a strong core and grip transitions tightly
  • Timing and synchronization are key for smooth execution

Extended Pyramid Elements

  • Flyers stay locked and engaged when moving positions
  • Back spots and bases communicate to keep stunts steady
  • Execute twists or dips with controlled momentum
